This probably isn’t the first time that you’ve heard of the term “Work-Life balance”, but in today’s day and age the world is continuing to get more chaotic so maybe there is more to this saying than we think. What do we do in situations when we feel like our cup is empty and our physical, spiritual, and emotional needs aren’t being made a priority?

Below are some healthy tips and tricks to get your life a little more balanced 

  • DEVELOP A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP WITH TIME – Do you find yourself rushing to beat the clock, running out the door on the minute? going a few kms over the speed limit just to gain some extra time so you can grab that coffee on the way to work, only to skull the coffee and not even enjoy the $5-6 cup of deliciousness? I’ve been guilty of this and I would say that 90% of the population can back me when I say that I’m not alone in this. Sorry to burst your busy little bubble but this kind of chaos isn’t helping to fill your cup up. Instead of doing all of the above,  – try getting up as soon as your alarm goes off – Leave the binds open and wake up with the sun – Change your alarm to something less abrupt than an old school alarm clock sound. Be organised the night before even if it means staying up an extra half an hour. Allow yourself time to do things slower. And if, despite all that, you are still running behind just be okay with it. Time management improves every day you work on it. 
  • CREATE A MORNING ROUTINE/MEDITATE – Have you heard that 20 mins of meditation can equal to eight hours of good sleep if done properly?  Now I totally get that meditation isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but did you know there are many forms of meditation which completely change based on the individual’s preference. Some examples would be journaling, going to the beach and watching the sunrise/waves, listening to podcasts, walking/running, sitting still and being present, breathwork and so, so much more. Take the time to meditate and then eat a slow breakfast, try to avoid checking emails or using your electronics straight away.
  • LEARN TO SAY NO TO THINGS THAT DONT SERVE YOU. Now I’ll be the first to put up my hand and say that a lot of the time I’m not sure how to say no. The guilt eats away at me but the truth is, I’ve been a lot happier when I do things that serve me. Sure there are things we don’t like to do such as errands, but cancelling plans or pushing them back doesn’t mean the world will end. There is nothing worse than having zero space in the day to move.
  • TIME BATCH  -If you are new to this concept then listen up. If your schedule is always chaotic and you struggle to remember little things that end up piling up. If you don’t enjoy your days off or if you don’t allow yourself a day off at all then time batching can prove very helpful. Try scheduling your day out in blocks. For example, allow 30-1hr replying and checking emails and that’s it. Don’t revisit unless urgent. Spend an allowed amount of time on marketing and social media. Allow at least 1hr of self-care per day. It could be a gym workout, reading a book or anything you find enjoyable. By time batching and scheduling things in, we can allow our not so enjoyable things an allotted amount of time. 
  • BEING PRESENT IN EACH MOMENT- I see this a lot where I head out to coffee or lunch or an event and my friend is across the table on her phone not even really paying attention to the conversation we are having in front of us. Over the last year or two, I have made a conscious effort to put my phone away while with friends. I also find living in autopilot is a real thing. Take driving for example, most of us can look back at our drive to work and not even remember what colour the sky was.  We aren’t present which (in the case of driving) is quite dangerous. I challenge you to look around next time you are in the car, put the phone away next time you are with friends. Have real, meaningful conversations with those who you love. Connection online isn’t the same as connecting in person. 
  • DISCONNECT AND SEPARATE YOUR SPACES. – Have you ever worked from your phone in your bed, studied in your bed or even taken calls in your bed? If so, you aren’t alone. It’s tempting and comfortable, but you might create more stress for yourself later on. Working from your bed can trick the brain into thinking your bed is a place of work, which will sometimes make it more difficult to fall asleep. Not only can it have an effect on sleep but working from home can be difficult because you may never fully switch off from work. We are trying to create a work-life balance here people! How can we do that if we are ‘always at work’, even when we are home?
