As the world gets thrown into chaos, our mental health struggles come to the forefront. In today’s blog, we are going to discuss what mental health is, where to go for help, tools and strategies to cope with these dis/eases.

What is mental health?
Mental health, defined by the World Health Organisation, is ‘a state of well-being in which the individual realises their own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to their community’. This looks different for everyone, and as individuals, we are all going to struggle with varying areas of life. There are 7 dimensions when defining mental health, including environmental, physical, intellectual, vocational, social, emotional and spiritual health.

Physical – Maintaining vitality and balance within the body.
Environmental – Influence your surroudnings have on your state of being (workplace, home, city etc.)
Intellectual – Challenging your mind and cultivating passion with conversation, new information and study.
Vocational – Learning new skills and creating a sense of achievement.
Social – Feeling supported and connected in your community.
Emotional – Having control over your emotional state and practicing gratitude.
Spiritual – Feeling a sense of inner peace. Having strong core values which have meaning.

Tip: Try drawing a circle, splitting the circle into the 7 dimensions and then scoring out of 10 how satisfied you are with that part of your life. Once you are done, evaluate which have the lowest number and then put tools in place to boost those numbers as you see fit. You may find that social is completely lacking and a few tweaks here and there can have the greatest impact on your moods.
