According to Donna Sigmond, R.D in ‘Infrared Sauna and Detoxification’, infrared saunas can help the body to remove heavy metals such as lead, aluminium and mercury along with plastic derived toxins such as BPA, BPS and toxic phthalates. Unlike conventional saunas, the infrared waves penetrate tissue up to three inches deep, encouraging the toxins from the lymphatic system, fat cells and blood to be released out through the skin and urine. This detox can assist with chemical sensitivities, improve symptoms of ADHD and autism related to toxicity, and the increased blood flow and improved cardiovascular health can rectify ED (erectile dysfunction). Our lymph vessels and nodes act as filters, purifying the cells to keep the immune system in fighting shape so keeping them healthy means they can help keep your body healthy.
In recent generations, the human body has been increasingly exposed to a vast array of toxic substances. From the nasties in the air that we breathe to the products we use on our homes and bodies, to the consumable toxins such as artificial sweeteners, pesticides and nasty preservatives that we consume on a regular basis. With this in mind, it is more important than ever to regularly detoxify for both your physical and mental health.
“I have been doing the Infrared Sauna 10 pack to expel toxins from my body in the past few weeks. As a florist, I work with flowers that are covered in nasty chemicals. Four sessions in and I already feel lighter, cleaner, the swelling in my joints is gone, and my skin doesn’t itch up as much. This week, 3 people have commented on how well I look and I’ve lost weight too” – Alicia Broom
Infrared sauna therapy has had a lot of success in assisting with skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema due to increased blood circulation. This type of sauna can also alleviate emotional stress by reducing cortisol, which is a common trigger for many skin conditions. As the capillary vessels expand and improve blood circulation, hormone and nerve related stress is reduced.
During muscle recovery, it is important that oxygen and white blood cells are delivered to the muscle tissue. According to a study (Effects of far-infrared sauna bathing on recovery from strength and endurance training sessions in men), infrared saunas were found to be beneficial for the neuromuscular system due to the deep penetration of the infrared rays and the improved cardiovascular activity. As the infrared sauna improves cardiovascular health and increases blood circulation, the body cools itself by diverting blood from the internal organs to the extremities and skin. The increased heart rate caused by the sauna also reduces the chance of congestive heart failure and can reduce the frequency of recurring colds/flu and alleviate allergic reactions. Just like a brief fever, the infrared sauna causes an immune response, increasing white blood cells to fight infection and improve the body’s immune response.
Additionally, infrared saunas can ease many types of depression and anxiety. The endocrine system is the collection of glands that produce hormones that regulate metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, and mood, among other things and the infrared sauna activates that system. According to this study, saunas can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety and assist with balancing hormones due to a change in secretion of serotonin and cortisol in the body. Dr. Jeffrey Lieberman, MD, has completed two studies in which he had people with major depression sit in an infrared sauna. In one of them, after a single infrared treatment, the 16 participants with major depression said their depression scores reduced by almost by 50% five days later.
Chronic fatigue, insomnia and brain fog can also be treated with regular infrared sauna use due to the detoxification process. In this study, 10 people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome sat in a 60°C Infrared Sauna for 15 minutes 5 days a week for 4 weeks. Their levels of anxiety, depression, fatigue, and performance status significantly improved after therapy. Using Infrared Saunas 1-7 times per week also lowers the risk of Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease according to a world first study by researchers at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) published in the December 2016 among those who used a sauna 4-7 times a week, the risk of any form of dementia was 66 percent lower and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease 65 percent lower than among those taking a sauna just once a week.
Infrared Saunas are also known for being extremely efficient at promoting improved metabolism and weight loss. For example, if a 68kg person usually burns around 300 calories jogging or swimming for 30 minutes, the infrared sauna can potentially burn 400 calories in one 30 minute session according to Dr Masakazu Imamura, in a study published in the Journal of American College of Cardiology in 2001. Additionally, this Birmingham study found that by using the sauna regularly, it can help people lose 1% of body fat per month. In conjunction with healthy eating and regular exercise, infrared saunas can be a useful method of losing unwanted fat.
Regular sweat-inducing heat saunas just release toxins from the pores and through the sweat glands. Infrared saunas work on a deeper level to release toxins that are being held in fat deposits, organs and glands beneath the surface of the skin.
